Athlete Gemene Mamite Tunuku has been issued an official anti-doping sanction after laboratory tests confirmed the presence of prohibited substances in her system.

The Ethiopian Anti-Doping Authority (EADA) conducted tests during two different competitions, which confirmed that the athlete had used Erythropoietin (EPO) and Dexamethasone, both of which are strictly prohibited under international sporting regulations.

The Penalties

As a result of these findings, the following disciplinary measures have been taken:

  • Six-Year Ban: Athlete Gemene is prohibited from participating in any sporting competition for a period of six years. The ban is effective retroactively from November 11, 2025, the date her provisional suspension began.

The Authority stated that it will continue to strengthen its testing and monitoring procedures across all levels of competition. Furthermore, it warned that strict legal and corrective actions will be taken not only against athletes who violate anti-doping rules but also against any individuals found to be collaborating or assisting them behind the scenes.
